Water treatment plant to quench Changlang’s thirst

CHANGLANG, Apr 13: Six days after The Arunachal Pioneer highlighted the acute scarcity of water, the Changlang district headquarters continues to be thirsty with the district administration and PHE seemingly unmoved.
On Thursday, local MLA Tesam Pongte attributed the drinking water scarcity to an unfinished water treatment plant (WTP) as well as the damage to the pipelines after a bridge collapsed. Work on the WTP is is progress, and the water problem will be solved in a couple of days, he said.
The district has always had water problem since its creation in the 1970s. “WTP will reduce the crisis to a great extent,” Pongte said, urging the people to be wary of water-borne diseases with the monsoon approaching.
“I have asked Chief Minister Pema Khandu to visit Changlang by May for the inauguration of various completed projects. I am committed to improving education, road, agriculture and generating employment for my people,” he said.
The MLA admitted the completion of road work in the town area has overshot its 2015-16 deadline, but attributed the delay to the vagaries of weather and the added responsibility of constructing footpaths.
The road from Margherita to Changlang, he pointed out, was completed in 2016 while three projects – WTP, mini secretariat and CC pavement road in the town – are nearing completion.
“The mini secretariat is being constructed phase wise. Phase-A has been funded and phase-B is in progress,” he said.
The government, Pongte asserted, makes policy and provides funds, but it is the responsibility of government officers to execute and the people to check irregularities, if any.
“I have been monitoring the progress and quality of work frequently. I have sought best quality and long-lasting concrete road for the town,” he said.
